Where should you start your Peru trip?

Tikaymi · 16 Aug 2026

Start with your international flight

For most international travelers, Lima is the practical arrival point. That does not mean Lima has to be the longest part of the trip. Use your flight connection, arrival time and return airport to decide where your route begins and ends.

Start in Lima when logistics come first

Lima is a useful first stop if you arrive late, want one full day to recover from the flight or plan to connect with Ica and Paracas. It also gives you time to organize a domestic flight before moving to Cusco.

Start with Cusco when Machu Picchu is the priority

If your main reason for visiting Peru is Machu Picchu, keep Cusco and the Sacred Valley at the center of the plan. The route should include acclimatization, ticket coordination and a realistic connection between the valley, train station and sanctuary.

Add other regions only after the core route works

Arequipa, Colca, Puno, the Amazon and the southern coast can extend the journey, but each one adds transport and recovery time. Build the core Cusco and Machu Picchu route first, then add a region that matches your available days.

The right first step

Write down your international arrival, departure city, travel dates, must-see place and preferred pace. Deicy can turn that information into an order that protects the important tickets and avoids unnecessary backtracking.
